Seasons of Life
There is a popular Christian song that has the lyrics “...just as seasons were made for change, so our lives were made for years...” I’d like to take out the word “years:” and replace it with either “days” or “hours.” I cannot remember who the songwriter is at the moment, but when I first heard this song years ago, a familiar scripture came to mind-Ecclesiastes 3. Verses 1-8 read:
There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens:
a time to be born and a time to die,
a time to plant and a time to uproot,
a time to kill and a time to heal,
a time to tear down and a time to build,
a time to weep and a time to laugh,
a time to mourn and a time to dance,
a time to scatter stones and a time to gather them,
a time to embrace and a time to refrain from embracing,
a time to search and a time to give up,
a time to keep and a time to throw away,
a time to tear and a time to mend,
a time to be silent and a time to speak,
a time to love and a time to hate,
a time for war and a time for peace.
God may be outside of space and time, but He often deals with us inside of it. I’ve often thought of this scripture as God allowing us a chance to rest. Him saying, “It’s ok to take a break from this or that; you can pick it back up later,” or Him saying “Now’s not the right time; be patient son,” or even Him saying “Do it now, the season of harvest has come.”
Today as I ponder this verse, this song, and a life that seems to change seasons even hourly at times, I am reminded of what God says in Philippians 4:11 “...I have learned to be content what ever the circumstances.” Weather winter, spring, fall or summer; whether joy, sadness, understanding, or confusion, I know God is still reigning supreme and He just wants me to have faith in that and to be satisfied in Him. In that same chapter God mentions “...a peace that surpasses all understanding...” May His peace that surpasses all understanding and every circumstance give me contentment in each, ever-changing season of life.
